Department of Social Services, State-Wide Training Program

Programs for caregivers working in Virginia's Licensed Assisted Living and Adult Day Care Facilities

Developed jointly by the Virginia Department of Social Services, Division of Licensing Programs and the VCU Department of Gerontology, these training programs are made possible through the use of Assisted Living and Adult Day Care facility licensing fees. These programs are provided exclusively for employees of Licensed Assisted Living Facilities and Adult Day Care Centers in Virginia.

Each site will have the appropriate forms available for continuing education credit the day of the training. Mail the completed form and processing fee to the VCU Department of Gerontology, PO Box 980228, Richmond, VA 23298-0228. The deadline for requesting CEUs is two weeks after the last training date. 

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS: This course meets the criteria of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. 0.6 CEUs will be awarded by letter and recorded by Virginia Commonwealth University. There is a $10 processing fee. 

Online application and advance payment of CEUs will not be accepted during online registration for each training course. Upon registering for a training, you will be asked to select if you want to receive CEU credit for the course. A $10 processing fee will be added to your total. You must complete the online CEU application form during registration. Refunds will not be given for no-show attendance. If you have any questions, please email 

Administrators will no longer need to apply for NAB credits for trainings offered by VCU's Department of Gerontology through the support of DSS as additional documentation of attendance is not required. These trainings meet 18VAC95-30-70B of the Regulations Governing the Practice of Assisted Living Facility Administrators: "In order for continuing education to be approved by the board [LTCA], it [training] shall be related to the domains of practice for residential care/assisted living and approved or offered by NAB, an accredited educational institution, or governmental agency."

Please maintain original copies of your Certificate of Attendance as it is your responsibility to maintain records of your continuing education for licensing. Each instructor authorized to teach the Individualized Service Plan Training must be registered in the ISP Trainer Database. The ISP Trainer Registration must be renewed annually on or before September 30th. (The first annual renewal is due September 2020)

Each Trainer must submit the ISP Trainer Registration Form, a copy of their current license, a copy of their UAI Certificate, and a check or money order for $30 made payable to VCU Gerontology. An official certificate will be sent to all approved trainers. 

Trainers will also need to purchase the ISP Curriculum. Please complete the ISP Materials Order Form and submit it with a check or money order made payable to VCU Gerontology. 

PLEASE NOTE: Final approval as an ISP Trainer includes passing a curriculum exam. Certificates will not be issued until the exam has been successfully passed. ISP trainings will not be valid unless the Trainer has received his or her signed Trainer Certificate.

Trainee Completion Documents

Trainers are required to submit a Trainee Completion Form and a Trainee Task Record to VCU for each individual trained with a check or money order for $10 made payable to VCU Gerontology. 

*VCU will verify that the training has been provided by an approved trainer before providing the trainee with their certificate.  If you are not an approved trainer listed in the VCU database, the trainee will not receive a certificate.

Why is this training important?

We’ve created this training to reduce violations, ensure safety and ultimately promote person-centered care within Virginia Assisted Living Facilities. The information from this presentation can be implemented by staff to improve overall quality of care.

Training Objectives

At the end of this training participants will have an increased:

  • Understanding of  the most recent top 10 violations in Assisted Living communities 
  • Ability to identify ways to avoid common violations and repeat violations in their facility
  • Understanding of how person-centered care can improve areas where violations are common
